The Right Hand

Scripture often speaks of being seated at God's right hand, but what does it mean? Three things, explains Tom Schreiner in his new commentary on Hebrews:

1) Power

“Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power,
your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.”
(Ex 15:6)

“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
You stretched out your right hand;
the earth swallowed them.”
(Ex 15:11-12)

2) Protection

“I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.”
(Ps 16:8)

“Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.”
(Ps 73:23)

“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
(Isa 41:10)

3) Triumph

“Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with the saving might of his right hand.”
(Ps 20:6)

“Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.”
(Ps 21:8)

“The Lord says to my Lord:
‘Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
(Ps 110:1)
